Page INF-4 1959 PASSENGER CAR PARTS LIST GENERAL INFORMATION SECTION I GENERAL INFORMATION 1959 PASSENGER CAR MODEL DESIGNATION The following information will acquaint you with the model code system being used with the 1959 series vehicles. The year is identified by the letter " M " for 1959. Each car make is identified by the letters P for Plymouth, D - Dodge, S - DeSoto, C - Chrysler, and Y for the Imperial. The various chassis for each make are identified by the numbers 1, 2, and 3. In the Plymouth and Dodge series only, No. 1 represents a 6 cylinder chassis and No. 2 an 8 cylinder chassis. On DeSoto, Chrysler, and Imperial, the numbers 1, 2, and 3 indicate one of the various 8 cylinder chassis built. The last letter in the model code indicates the price class in which the particular model falls, as shown below. GENERAL INFORMATION 1959 PASSENGER CAR PARTS LIST Page INF-5 1959 PASSENGER CAR SERIAL NUMBER DESIGNATION The new serial number coding system will be uniform for all car assembly plants. The code breakdown is as follows: The serial number will consist of a ten (10) digit alpha and numeric sequence number. The first digit being an alpha designation for model year - "M". The second digit is the numeric identification for car line used in the uniform body codes. 1. Plymouth 6 Cyl. 2. Plymouth 8 Cyl. 3. Dodge 4. DeSoto 5. Chrysler 6. Imperial The next digit is the model series identification used in the uniform body codes. 0. Coronet 6 Cyl. 1. Coronet 8, Fires weep, Windsor, Imperial 2. Thunderbolt 3. Savoy, Royal, Firedome, Saratoga, Crown Imperial 5. Belvedere, Custom Royal, Fireflite, New Yorker, LeBaron 6. Fury, Dodge 6 Cyl. Taxi, DeSoto 6 Cyl. Taxi 7. All Wagons 8. Plymouth 6 Cyl. Taxi, Plymouth 8 Cyl. Taxi, all other 8 Cyl. Taxis 9. Special Models (D300 - Adventurer - Sports Fury, Pursuit Sedan, etc.) The fourth digit will be a numeric designation for producing plant. 1.
