The Lancer was introduced by Mitsubishi in 1973 and by 2008 over 6 million had been sold.

In 2005 Mitsubishi updated the grill on the Lancer and designed it to resemble another of their vehicle, the Galant.

Between 2007 and 2012, Mitsubishi released several updated models of the Lancer. These updates would include new transmission options, more engines options, automatic climate control and various interior updates.
