K001/96 - TRANSMISSION REPAIR PROCEDURE TORQUE CONVERTOR MATERIAL FLAKING SI107609 TSB NUMBER: K001/96 For Internal Mazda Corporate Use Only DESCRIPTION APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS 1989 - 95 MPV with V-6 engines and ECAT transmissions. 1988 - 95 929 with ECAT transmissions. DESCRIPTION The symptoms listed below may result from torque convertor clutch (TCC) material flaking off inside the torque convertor and flowing to the oil pan. Line pressure drops and the oil pump will cavitate when enough material is drawn against the oil pan filter. Follow the diagnostic procedure listed in this bulletin when the symptoms (listed below) occur. NOTE: Service Managers should place a copy of this bulletin at the beginning of section K in the workshop manual. SYMPTOMS: Transmission will not move when hot. Shudder during torque convertor lock-up. Slipping Whining noise caused by pump cavitation. DIAGNOTIC PROCEDURE 1. Remove the dip stick. Inspect oil color - fluid should be brown. Smell the fluid - normally, the oil will not smell burnt. The oil should smell like used oil from a good transmission. NOTE: If the oil has a powerful burnt smell, do not proceed, the transmission must be replaced. 2. Check the line pressure. Refer to section K of the workshop manual for instructions. Line pressure will be low. Line pressure will be normal initially then drop as material is drawn to the filter. 3. Remove the oil pan. Large amounts of clutch material should be in the pan and on the filter. NOTE: If metallic particles are found, do not proceed, the transmission must be replaced.
REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Clean the oil pan and replace the filter. 2. Replace the torque convertor. NOTE: Check the torque convertor mounting bolt length. The bolts must not exceed 10.3mm in length. Bolts that are too long will damage the TCC lock up surface by creating a high spot. This high spot will wear the clutch material immediately. 3. Flush oil cooler and lines using Mazda recommended flushing equipment. NOTE: Using compressed air alone is not sufficient for cleaning the oil cooler. 4. Recheck line pressure. 5. Test drive vehicle. Check specifically for slippage and shudder during TCC lock-up.
