The Lincoln MKZ is Lincoln’s version of the Ford Fusion mid-size sedan. To differentiate the first generation Lincoln MKZ from other Ford products, engineers utilized an all-new aluminum 3.5 liter double overhead cam engine capable of producing 265 horsepower on regular 87 octane fuel. The car was capable of 17 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg at highway speeds. Even better, an all-wheel drive model was available that could blast from zero to sixty miles per hour in 6.8 seconds, according to testing by Motor Trend Magazine.
In 2010, the Lincoln MKZ received a major facelift, replacing the dated front end style with Lincoln’s new split grille. Leather seating by legendary British producer Bridge of Weir was standard. Many new features were introduced, including adaptive HID headlights, rain sensing windshield wipers, a six-speed automatic transmission and suspension re-engineering to improve ride quality and stability.
Lincoln introduced it’s first-ever hybrid in 2011, selecting the MKZ as the platform to debut the new technology. The MKZ Hybrid was the first Lincoln vehicle to receive a four cylinder engine in the nearly 100 year history of the company. With an EPA rating of 41 mpg city and 49 mpg highway, the MKZ was the most fuel efficient luxury American car on the market. A revision in 2013 further increased the fuel economy, with highway mileage exceeding 55 mpg.
The Lincoln MKZ was recognized as the top luxury hybrid, along with the Lexus CT200h, which it was designed to compete against by the Union of Concerned Scientists. The MKZ received a higher score than the non-luxury Toyota Prius.
Lincoln introduced the second series of the MKZ in 2013. The newly redesigned model was offered with a new 2.0 liter EcoTec four cylinder capable of attaining 33 mpg on pump gas. As with the previous series and a departure from industry norms, the Hybrid version was available at the same MSRP as non-hybrid models. In 2017, Lincoln abandoned the split grill design that received negative criticism for looking like a mustache, replacing it with a new design.
