DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Identification Codes Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal plate riveted to the instrument panel, where it can be read through the windshield on the driver side. The VIN is repeated on the vehicle certification (VC) label. Vehicle Certification (VC) Label The vehicle certification (VC) label contains the manufacturer name, the month and year of manufacture, the certification statement and the VIN. It also includes gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR), wheel and tire data, and additional information codes. The VC label is attached to the driver side door or door lock pillar. The fourth VIN position is for the brake system and the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) class. All brake systems are hydraulic.
