INTRODUCTION USING THIS MANUAL To provide simplicity and ease of use, this manual has been divided into 23 Groups with each group representing a major section of the vehicle. Each Group is then broken down into "Parts" which refer to a specific or localized part of the vehicle. Where applicable, Parts contain a Description, Operation, Diagnosis and Testing, Removal and Installation Disassembly and Assembly procedures for the component covered in the Part. Diagnosis Charts are also included to help system- atically locate and correct problems encountered. In most cases, specifications are included at the end of each Group together with any special tools recommended to perform the operation. IMPORT ANT SAFETY NOTICE Appropriate service methods and proper repair procedures are essential for the safe, reliable operation of all motor vehicles as well as the personal safety of the individual doing the work. This Repair Manual provides general directions for accomplishing service and repair work with tested, effective techniques. Following them will help assure reliability. There are numerous variations in procedures, techniques, tools, and parts for servicing vehicles, as well as in the skill of the individual doing the work. This manual cannot possibly anticipate all such variations and provide advice or cautions as to each. Accordingly, anyone who departs from the instruc- tions provided in this manual must first establish that he com- promises neither his personal safety, Australian Design Rules, nor the vehicle integrity by his choice of methods, tools, or parts. NOTICES, CAUTIONS, AND WARNINGS As you read through the procedures, you will come across NOTES, CAUTIONS, and WARNINGS. Each one is there tor a specific purpose. NOTES give you added information tt)at will help you to complete a particular procedure. CAUTIONS are given to prevent you from making an error that could damage the vehicle. WARNINGS remind you to be especially careful in those areas where carelessness can cause per- sonal injury. The following list contains some general WARNINGS that you should follow when you work on a vehicle. • Always wear safety glasses for eye protection. • Use safety stands whenever a procedure requires you to be under the vehicle. • Be sure that the ignition switch is always in the OFF position, unless otherwise required by the procedure. • Set the parking brake when working on the vehicle. Set manual transmission in REVERSE or automatic trans- mission in PARK. • Operate the engine only in a well-ventilated area to avoid the danger of carbon monoxide. • Keep yourself and your clothing away from moving parts, when the engine is running, especially the tan and drive belts to alternator etc. • To prevent serious burns, avoid contact with hot metal parts such as the radiator, exhaust manifold, tail pipe, and muffler. • Do not smoke while working on a vehicle. • To avoid injury, always remove rings, watches, loose hanging jewellery, and loose clothing before beginning to work on a vehicle. REPLACEMENT PARTS Replacement parts are made to the same exacting stan- dards and tolerances as the original factory-fitted com- ponents. Only genuine FORD and MOTORCRAFT replace- ment parts, or parts meeting specifications of the Ford Motor Company, should be used as service replacements. SPECIAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT Special Tools and Equipment may be required, to success- fully complete a particular repair operation. New and previously released tools are detailed in the Special Tools Section of this manual (Section 21). Vehicle Identification 1-1-2 AUSTRALIAN DESIGN RULES Compliance Plate Australian Design Rules (A.D.R.) require vehicle manufac- turers to comply with specific requirements regarding con- sumer, environment protection, and safety devices. A com- pliance plate is fitted to the vehicle and this contains codes which relate to specific design rules in effect at the time of vehicle manufacture. Legislation requires that no alteration be made to a vehicle that would result in the vehicle not complying with the Design Rules referred to on the compliance plate of the vehicle. To ensure continuing compliance it is imperative that the engine/emission system is serviced according to the specified procedure. Emission Decal Emission Control Information Decal is affixed to the vehicle firewall. Should this decal become mutilated or unreadable, a new decal must be obtained and affixed to the vehicle. To ensure continued compliance it is imperative that the engine and emission system is serviced according to the service pro- cedures outlined in groups 20 and 23 of this manual. Should it become necessary to replace a component which effects vehicle emissions, it is mandatory that the replace- ment part be of the same calibration as the original part. No circumstances would permit the disconnection, altera- tion or modification, of any emission related component on vehicles marketed by Ford Sales Company of Australia Limited, except in accordance with the diagnostic, maintenance and repair procedures specified in the Com- pany's service materials. Any person who removes, modifies or otherwise renders ineffective any emission control components fitted to a vehicle could be contravening the relevant regulations and be guilty of an offence under the regulations.
