The 280ZX was a complete redesign of the 280Z, with the only similarity being the inline-6 engine. It was offered in two-seat and four-seat models, and was a softer, heavier car than previous models. The focus of the 280ZX was much more on driver comfort than on performance and speed.

It got a facelift in 1982, with a revised hood, new alloy wheels, new pin-stripe style taillights and rubber bumpers. Power steering became standard equipment as well. After 1983, the 300ZX model replaced it.
