SECTION 1 - SAFETY - CHAPTER 1 1-2 PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS PERSONAL SAFETY Throughout this manual and on machine decals, you will find precautionary statements (DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION) followed by specific instructions. These precautions are intended for the personal safety of you and those working with you. Please take the time to read them. DANGER This word DANGER indicates an immediate hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. The color associated with Danger is RED. WARNING This word WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. The color associated with Warning is ORANGE. CAUTION This word CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also used to alert against unsafe practices. The color associated with Caution is YELLOW. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE DANGER, WARNING, AND CAUTION INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS BODILY INJURY OR DEATH. MACHINE SAFETY The precautionary statement (IMPORTANT) is followed by specific instructions. This statement is intended for machine safety. IMPORTANT: The word IMPORTANT is used to inform the reader of something he needs to know to prevent minor machine damage if a certain procedure is not followed. INFORMATION NOTE: Instructions used to identify and present supplementary information.
SECTION 1 - SAFETY - CHAPTER 1 1-3 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 1. Always disengage the PTO, lock the tractor brakes, and shut off the tractor engine before: A. Leaving the tractor seat. B. Lubricating. C. Cleaning or unplugging any part of the mower-conditioner. D. Adjusting the mower-conditioner. 2. Always lower the header to the ground or en- gage the transport stops when parking the mower-conditioner. 3. Always use the header transport stops and tongue cylinder shutoff valve or mechanical tongue shift latch pin when transporting the mower-conditioner. 4. Never work under a raised header unless it is securely locked with the header transport stops. 5. Always block the wheels before working on or under the mower-conditioner. 6. Do not start the tractor until you know that everyone is at a safe distance from the mower-conditioner and have made sure no tools are lying on the machine. 7. Keep all shields in place. Never work around the mower-conditioner in loose clothing that could catch in a moving part. 8. Do not modify any shields or operate the mower-conditioner with any shields removed. 9. Always use adequate lights and safety warn- ing devices when transporting the mower- conditioner on public roads or after dark. Check with your local law enforcement agen- cies for specific requirements. 10. Limit towing speeds to 40 km/hr. (25 mph) maximum. 11. Never stand near the mower-conditioner while it is running. 12. Operate the mower-conditioner only at the PTO speed for which it is designed. Attach a 540 rpm implement only to a 540 rpm PTO and a 1000 rpm implement to a 1000 rpm PTO. 13. Long exposure to loud noise can damage your hearing. Wear a suitable hearing protective device such as earmuffs or earplugs if you are exposed to uncomfortable noise levels. 14. Before raising or lowering the header, be sure no one is standing nearby or touching the mower-conditioner. 15. Do not stand close to or lift the cutter bar shields until all rotating components have come to a complete stop. 16. Use of the optional safety chain is recom- mended when operating on a public road. 17. Use of the optional trailing light kit is highly recommended when operating on a public road.
SECTION 2 - DRIVELINES - CHAPTER 1 2-2 The Model 408, 411, 412, and 415 utilize constant ve- locity U-joint drivelines for smooth operation, and to provide the ability to operate the mower-conditioners to the side of the tractor. The primary PTO shaft on both 540 and 1000 RPM units is equipped with 80 o U-joints at both ends. The secondary PTO shaft uses standard U-joints. The CV joint degree rating indicates the maximum allowable operating angle of the CV U-joint; operation at angles exceeding that value will result in U-joint failure. Rotate the cylinder shutoff valve handle to position it in line with the valve body. Fully extend the cylinder to shift the tongue to the maximum left position. Do not operate the PTO at any other tongue position. Do not swing the tongue from the field to the transport position until the PTO has been disengaged and has stopped rotating. Close the tongue cylinder valve to prevent accidental shifting of the tongue. IMPORTANT: Serious damage could result to the driveline if this procedure is not followed.
