Land Rover began production of their Defender series in 1983. If you happen to own one of these vehicles, you should add the Land Rover Defender workshop manual to go along with it.

Originally called the “Land Rover 110”, it was called this in a nod to its 110-inch wheelbase. The Land Rover One Ten was released in 1983. In 1984 Land Rover debuted the Land Rover Ninety. Again, the Ninety was built on a 90-inch platform. These two models had grilles that designated their correct numbering.

In 1991 Land Rover released another vehicle. To avoid any confusion with the 110 or 90, the renamed these vehicles as Defender 110 and Defender 90.

Over the years little changes were made to the series. By 1984 the Defender was changed to use wind up windows instead of sliding window panels. Along the way, the interior was also redesigned and updated. Additionally, the engine was continually updated to have a more powerful engine.

The Land Rover also began to be marketed as a family car. Up until this point the company had showcased their vehicles in a more utilitarian way.

In the 1990s the company began to market the 110 and 90 as the Defender. This was because they had launched a new vehicle in the company. This rebranding also saw the Defender receiving many updates. Changes were made to the engine that vastly improved turbocharging. This improvement allowed the Land Rover Defender to finally reach higher speeds and to also pull heavier loads with greater ease. In an effort to become more upscale. The company spent the 90s refining and updating the Land Rover Defender.

In 2007 the Land Rover Defender was outfitted with a new drive train. This was done to update the vehicle to meet emissions standards. Additionally, the interior dashboard received its first major update since 1983.

In 1993 the Land Rover Defender was available for purchase in North America. Land Rover continued to improve and upgrade the defender both under the hood and in the interior. 1997 was the last year for the Defender to be produced in the United States.

Over the years Land Rover released certain limited editions of the Defender to commemorate various milestones. Some were available in the US and others only in Europe and Australia.

Land Rover is currently working on a new design for 2020.

If you own a Land Rover Defender, you should have the Land Rover Defender repair manual as well.
