The Pontiac G8 doesn’t have a traditional transmission dipstick like older cars do. GM went with a sealed transmission design on these, so checking or topping off the ATF isn’t as simple as popping the hood and pulling a stick.
Here’s how you check it:
- Get the car up on a level lift — you need it flat, and you’ll be working underneath.
- Let the trans warm up to operating temp — usually around 30–40°C (86–104°F).
- With the engine running and the transmission in Park, remove the check/fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission (6L80).
- If fluid dribbles out, you’re good. If not, you’re low.
And yeah — it’s a bit of a pain. Most shops use a scan tool to monitor trans temp and a special fill adapter to top it off properly.
In any case, working on the transmission will be incredibly difficult without the right guide. We recommend grabbing this 👉🏻 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 OEM Service & Repair Manual, which contains everything the manufacturer provides for working on the 5L40-E, 6L80-E, or TR-6060 transmissions.
