ENGINE IDENTIFICATION The engine family designation is shown on the emission control information plate (attached to radiator crossmember). The first character identifies the model year ("X" for 1999; "Y" for 2000), while the sixth, seventh and eighth characters identify the engine displacement. ADJUSTMENTS HYDRAULIC LASH ADJUSTMENT NOTE: Engine is equipped with hydraulic valve lifters; valve clearance adjustment is not necessary. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. WARNING: Always relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components. NOTE: For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removal. FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE Disconnect fuel pump connector. Start engine. Allow engine to run until it stalls. Turn ignition off. Reconnect fuel pump connector. ENGINE NOTE: Manufacturer procedure recommends removing engine and transmission as an assembly. Removal & Installation 1) Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine compartment covers as necessary to access all engine electrical connectors. Drain engine coolant and remove radiator. 2) Using a piece of sheet metal or a plastic guard, cover A/C condenser. Remove coolant reservoir. Remove left and right boost pressure tubes. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove accessory drive belt. Remove power steering pump, leaving fluid lines connected. Tie pump to side of engine compartment. 3) Disconnect fuel supply and return lines at rear of engine compartment. Disconnect engine electrical connectors as necessary to facilitate engine removal. Disconnect accelerator pedal cable. Disconnect all necessary vacuum hose connections to facilitate engine removal. 4) Disconnect radiator hoses at cylinder head and water pump. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove steering shock. Remove rear engine mount. Remove drive shaft. Ensure shift lever is in Park and disconnect shift interlock cable. 5) Disconnect harness connector at transmission. Disconnect transmission shift rods. On manual transmission models, remove clutch slave cylinder. Disconnect front engine mounts at frame. Attach engine hoist to lifting eyes. 6) Raise engine enough to gain access A/C compressor mounting bolts. Disconnect A/C compressor and tie out of way. Remove engine and transmission as an assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. INTAKE MANIFOLD Removal & Installation

Remove air intake ducting as necessary. 2) Disconnect fuel supply and return lines at rear of engine compartment. Disconnect all necessary electrical and vacuum connections to facilitate intake manifold removal. 3) Disconnect control cables as necessary from throttle body. Remove fuel injectors. Remove intake manifold bolts. Remove intake manifold. To install, reverse removal procedure. EXHAUST MANIFOLD Removal & Installation Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove exhaust pipe-to- manifold nuts. Loosen or remove exhaust pipe bracket as necessary. Remove nuts attaching exhaust manifold to engine. Remove exhaust manifold. To install, reverse removal procedure. CYLINDER HEAD CAUTION: DO NOT rotate engine using camshaft sprocket bolt. DO NOT rotate engine in reverse direction. Removal & Installation 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Unbolt exhaust manifold from cylinder head. Unbolt exhaust bracket from transmission. 2) Remove air intake ducting as necessary. Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD. Disconnect crankcase ventilation pipe. Disconnect coolant hose located at rear of cylinder head. 3) Remove valve cover. Remove coolant thermostat housing. Remove front cover from cylinder head. See CYLINDER HEAD FRONT COVER. Unbolt oil dipstick tube. Position crankshaft to 20-30 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC) of compression stroke for cylinder No. 1. 4) Lock camshafts using Locking Pins (111 589 03 15 00). See Fig. 1. Mark camshafts and timing chain with a colored marking. Remove timing chain tensioner. See Fig. 1. Remove timing chain guide rail in cylinder head.

See Fig. 1. Remove intake camshaft with camshaft adjuster. Remove first camshaft bearing cap. Install lifting bracket using bearing cap bolts. 6) Remove guide rail pin. See Fig. 1. Remove 4 cylinder head bolts located in timing chain housing. See Fig. 1. 7) Disconnect all necessary electrical and vacuum connections to facilitate cylinder head removal. With engine cooled down, remove cylinder head bolts in reverse order of installation. See Fig. 2. Using a hoist, lift cylinder head from engine. See Fig. 1. Installation 1) To install, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW camshaft sprocket bolts. Coat guide rail pin with sealant before installation. See Fig. 1. 2) Replace cylinder head bolts. Apply oil to threads and head contact surface of NEW cylinder head bolts before installation. Torque cylinder head bolts in proper sequence. See Fig. 2. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. DO NOT pressurize cooling system until engine has been ran and warmed to operating temperature. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

CYLINDER HEAD FRONT COVER Removal & Installation 1) Drain cooling system. Remove valve cover. Remove coolant thermostat housing. See Fig. 3. Unbolt front cover from cylinder head. Remove front cover. 2) To install, reverse removal procedure. Use sealant on sealing surfaces of front cover. Install a NEW "O" ring for camshaft adjuster. See Fig. 3. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
