1998-2002 STEERING Electronic Power Steering - 210 Chassis (With 4MATIC) MODEL IDENTIFICATION MODEL IDENTIFICATION (1998-1999) MODEL IDENTIFICATION (2000-02) PRODUCTION DATE INFORMATION WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. CAUTION: Vehicles equipped with coded radios are susceptible to damage when battery is disconnected. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position and radio is turned off before disconnecting battery. Have radio code available when disconnecting battery or removing radio. Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) in instrument cluster may illuminate. angle sensor must be reactivated. To activate steering angle sensor follow listed steps:  Start engine and allow to idle.  Turn steering wheel from lock to lock.  MIL should go out. If MIL remains on, see SELF - DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM (SECTION 11) . TROUBLE SHOOTING SYMPTOM INDEX Use symptom index to determine which system tests to perform. See Fig. 5 . Reading Diagnostic Trouble Code Memory NOTE: Reading DTC memory can only be done with HHT scan tool. It is important to read out the DTC's from the BAS system first, since the DTC's from the other systems are stored in BAS during the diagnostic process. 2000 Mercedes-Benz E320 4Matic 1998-2002 STEERING Electronic Power Steering - 210 Chassis (With 4MATIC)

 Turn ignition ON.  Press start button for 2-4 seconds.  Read and record diagnostic trouble codes for the BAS, ETS, ME and ETC systems.  Press start button again for 2-4 seconds.  Read and record diagnostic trouble code. Repeat listed steps until first diagnostic trouble code reappears.  Perform actual/nominal value comparisons.  Perform activations.  Follow up and repair displayed DTC's.  After successful repairs, erase all DTC's. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes  Press start button for 2-4 seconds.  Wait 3 seconds, then press start button for 6-8 seconds, thereby erasing the previously displayed diagnostic trouble code from memory.  Each stored diagnostic trouble code must be erased individually. DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS (SECTION 12) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS NOTE: Erasing of stored diagnostic trouble codes must begin within 20 seconds of reading the diagnostic trouble code. After 20 seconds, the diagnostic trouble code can no longer be erased. Erasing procedure can be restarted by performing diagnostic trouble code memory readout after the fault is again displayed. NOTE: For aid in using diagnostic charts, see USING DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS .
