ENGINE IDENTIFICATION The engine family designation is shown on the emission control information plate (attached to radiator crossmember). The first character identifies the model year ("X" for 1999; "Y" for 2000) while the sixth, seventh and eighth characters identify the engine displacement. XMBXT03.2GNB (1) - The engine identification number must be used when ordering replacement parts. For certification reasons, engine 112.920 falls into the 3.2L engine family, even if actual displacement is 2.8L. ADJUSTMENTS VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT Hydraulic lifters are used, no valve adjustments are required. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. WARNING: ALWAYS relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components. NOTE: For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removal. Also place mating marks on engine hood and other major assemblies before removal. FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE WARNING: Wear eye protection when opening service valve. Turn ignition off. Loosen fuel filler cap. Open service valve located on front of passenger side fuel rail. Using a rag or container, catch fuel from fuel rail service valve. Fuel pressure is now released. ENGINE NOTE: On C280, CLK320 and E320, engine and transmission are removed as one. On ML320, remove engine without transmission. CAUTION: Inspect both rear lifting eyes on engine. Right rear lifting eye is identified by a star and code number 02 on stem. Left rear lifting eye is identified with a star and code number 04. Replace rear engine lifting eyes which are not identified as indicated. Removal & Installation 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. On C280 and CLK320, battery is located under floor covering in right rear of trunk. On E320, battery is located under rear seat. On C280, CLK320 and E320, remove lower engine compartment cover. 2) On all models, release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE. Drain engine coolant at radiator. Drain engine oil. Remove engine cooling fan and cooling fan shroud. Remove air cleaner housing. Remove air intake ducting. 3) Disconnect coolant hoses at water pump. Disconnect coolant hose at thermostat housing. On ML320, remove coolant expansion reservoir. Disconnect transmission dipstick guide tube at cylinder head. On CLK320, disconnect coolant hose at expansion reservoir. 4) On all models, disconnect vacuum hose at brake servo. Remove fluid from power steering reservoir. Disconnect return and

On C280, CLK320 and E320, disconnect bracket for automatic transmission and power steering pump at oil pan. 5) On all models, disconnect vacuum hose purge control valve. Disconnect fuel delivery hose. On C280, CLK320 and E320, disconnect heater hoses at firewall. On ML320, disconnect heater hose at rear of cylinder head. On all models, disconnect engine wiring harness. 6) Remove accessory drive belt. On C280, CLK320 and ML320, disconnect automatic transmission oil cooler pipes at radiator. Remove A/C compressor from engine and set aside with hoses attached. 7) Disconnect exhaust system at manifold. On C280, CLK320 and ML320, disconnect driveshaft at transmission. On all models, disconnect transmission park interlock cable. On C280, CLK320 and ML320, disconnect transmission shift rods. Support transmission and remove rear engine crossmember at transmission. 8) On ML320, remove torque converter bolts. Remove engine starter without disconnecting electrical connections. Remove all transmission-to-engine bellhousing bolts, except for top 2 bolts. 9) On all models, remove front engine mount bolts. Ensure all, electrical, vacuum and other hose connections are disconnected. On C280, CLK320 and E320, using a hoist, remove engine and transmission assembly. 10) On ML320, install transmission support. Using a hoist, slightly lift engine. Remove 2 remaining transmission-to-engine bellhousing bolts. Remove engine from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. OVERHAUL NOTE: Information is not available. ENGINE OILING ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM Crankcase Capacity Oil capacity is 8.5 qts. (8.0L) with filter. Oil Pressure With engine at operating temperature, oil pressure is 10 psi (.7 bar) or more at 700 RPM. Oil pressure is 44 psi (3.0 bar) or more at 3000 RPM.
