SECTION 100-01: Identification Codes 2002 Taurus/Sable Workshop Manual DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Identification Codes The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped to a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel top, upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label. Item Description 1 World manufacturer identifier (WMI) 2 Restraint type code 3 Vehicle line, series, body type code 4 Engine type code 5 Computer generated check digit 6 Model year code 7 Assembly plant code 8 Production sequence number Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) World Manufacturer Identifier 1FA — Ford Motor Company, USA, passenger car • 1ME — Mercury, USA, passenger car • The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer code. F — Active safety belts — all positions, driver and front passenger second generation air bags • H — Active safety belts — all positions, driver and front passenger second generation air bags with driver and front passenger side impact air bags • The fourth VIN position is the vehicle restraint type code. Vehicle Line, Series and Body Type P52 — Taurus LX, four-door • P53 — Taurus SE, 2V, four-door • P54 — Taurus SE, 4V, four-door • P55 — Taurus Special Value Group, four-door • P56 — Taurus SE-Comfort Group, four-door • P58 — Taurus SE, station wagon • P59 — Taurus SE-Comfort, station wagon • M50 — Sable GS, four-door • M53 — Sable LS, four-door • M55 — Sable LS-Premium, four-door • M58 — Sable GS, station wagon • M59 — Sable LS-Premium, station wagon • Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type. Engine Type U — 3.0L, EFI, six-cylinder • S — 3.0L, EFI, DOHC, six-cylinder • 2 — 3.0L, six-cylinder, flex-fuel • The eighth VIN position is the engine displacement and number of cylinders. The ninth VIN position is a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit. Model Year 2 — 2002 • The tenth VIN position is the model year code. Assembly Plant A — Atlanta (Hapeville, Georgia) • G — Chicago (Chicago, Illinois) • S — Pilot Plant (Allen Park, Michigan) • The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code. Production Sequence Number 100001-599999 — Taurus • 600001-999999 — Sable • The last six VIN positions are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. Because of this, calibration identification consisting of more than five characters will wrap to the second line on the VC label. Powertrain calibration information is printed in the lower right corner of the Vehicle Certification Label. Only the base calibration information is printed. Revision levels will not appear, however, they can be found in On Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS). For the current model year, Ford Motor Company is using three different protocols which describe powertrain base calibration. These protocols are designed to provide worldwide standardization for vehicle calibration. If the electronic calibration strategy has been used since 1998 and carried into the current model year, Protocol 1 will be used. Refer to Protocol 1 below. If the electronic calibration strategy has been used since 1999 and is carried into the current model year, Protocol 2 will be used. Refer to Protocol 2 below. For electronic calibration strategies introduced in 2000 or later model years, Protocol 3 will be used. Refer to Protocol 3 below. Vehicle Code DD — Taurus/Sable • The vehicle code indicates the vehicle line to which the code applies. Transmission Code 1 — Automatic transmission • The transmission code identifies the type of transmission used.
