Identification Codes
The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is
stamped on a metal tab riveted on the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN number is
also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.
Vehicle Identification Number
The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier.
1FT — Ford Motor Company, USA, truck, completed vehicle
2FT — Ford Motor Company, Canada, truck, completed vehicle
3FT — Ford Motor Company, Mexico, truck, completed vehicle

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and GVW code (all vehicles use hydraulic brakes).
3 — 6,600 pounds, F-250 under 8,500 pounds GVWR
Z — 5,001-6,000 pounds with second generation air bags
R — 6,001-7,000 pounds with second generation air bags
P — 7,001-8,000 pounds with second generation air bags
D — 5,001-6,000 pounds with first generation air bags
E — 6,001-7,000 pounds with first generation air bags
F — 7,001-8,000 pounds with first generation air bags
Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type.
F07 — F-150 Regular Cab, 4x2 (Flareside)
F08 — F-150 Regular Cab, 4x4 (Flareside)
F17 — F-150 Regular Cab, 4x2 (Styleside)
F18 — F-150 Regular Cab, 4x4 (Styleside)

W — 4.6L, Modular SOHC, EFI, V8, Gas
M — 5.4L, SOHC, Natural Gas
Z — 5.4L, Bi-Fuel (NGV/Propane)
3 — 5.4L, 2V, SOHC, SFI, V8, Gas
L — 5.4L, 2V, SOHC, EFI, V8, Gas
The ninth VIN position is a check digit.
The tenth VIN position is the model year code.
X — 1999

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.
L — Michigan Truck (Wayne, Michigan)
S — Allen Park (Allen Park, Michigan)
C — Ontario Truck (Oakville, Ontario)
E — Kentucky Truck (Jefferson County, Kentucky)
K — Kansas City (Claycomo, Missouri)
N — Norfolk (Norfolk, Virginia)
M — Cuautitlan (Cuautitlan, Mexico)
The last six VIN positions are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the
vehicle serial and warranty number.

Vehicle Certification (VC) Label

The vehicle certification (VC) label contains the manufacturer name, the month and year of
manufacture, the certification statement, and the VIN. It also includes gross vehicle weight ratings
(GVWR).

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Jacking
WARNING: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut down prior to
hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off
the air suspension switch located in the RH kick panel area. Failure to do so may result in
unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs which may result in shifting of the vehicle
during these operations.
WARNING: Do not run the engine when jacking the vehicle. The wheels contacting the
ground could cause the vehicle to move.
WARNING: Support the vehicle prior to performing any procedure requiring the vehicle to
be jacked off the ground.
WARNING: Make sure the jack and jack stands are properly located to prevent the vehicle
from falling.
WARNING: Wheel chocks should be used to prevent the vehicle from rolling and falling
off the jack.
CAUTION: Never use a halfshaft as a lifting point.

The jacking point is a raised boss located on the front suspension lower arm (3079).

The jacking point is a flat portion on the frame indicated by the arrow cut out. The jacking point is
located behind the front tire and wheel assembly.
Jacking Points — Rear
CAUTION: Never use the differential housing as a lifting point.
The rear jacking points are located on the rear axle (4001).
