Yeah, that “feels weak when you hit the gas” thing can come from a few different places.
Most of the time on a 4Runner, I’d be looking at:
- clogged air filter → engine can’t breathe properly
- fuel issue (dirty injectors, weak fuel pump, clogged filter)
- dirty throttle body or MAF sensor → throws off air/fuel mix
- spark plugs or ignition coils starting to go
- restricted exhaust / catalytic converter (big one if it feels like it’s choking)
- transmission slipping → engine revs but car doesn’t really move
- sensor issues (like O2 sensor, MAF, etc.) messing with fueling
If it’s really noticeable under load (like uphill or hard acceleration), clogged cat or fuel delivery problems are pretty common causes. Hard to say exactly without knowing your year, engine, and whether you’ve got any warning lights, but that’s where I’d start.
But if you want to dig into it properly, a service & repair manual will walk you through step-by-step diagnostics and tests, so you can spot the problem immediately and know how to handle it.
