On a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban 2500, the trailer brake control module / brake controller relay isn’t under the dash like on some trucks. It’s tucked up near the front of the vehicle’s fuse/relay center and the tow/haul module area.
Here’s where you’ll usually find it:
- Under the hood, on the driver’s side — right up by the battery and fuse box
- There’s a relay block in that area that has the brake controller relay
- The actual trailer brake module (controller module) is usually mounted nearby, often attached to the inner fender or near the frame rail behind the fuse block
- On some models there’s also a tow/haul module that interfaces with it
If you pull the cover off the under-hood fuse/relay box, you’ll see the relay layout printed on the inside of the lid. One of those relays is the brake controller relay.
Once you find it, you can test or swap the relay just like any other.
If you need exact locations, pinouts, and wiring diagrams for the brake controller, this 👉 2009 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 Service & Repair Manual has the full electrical section that shows it step-by-step.
