On those Mercury 2-stroke outboards (75–125 HP range), the kill switch is pretty simple. It works by grounding the ignition system to shut the engine off.
Here’s the general idea:
- There’s a black/yellow wire in the Mercury harness.
- When that wire is connected to ground, the engine shuts off.
- When it’s open (not grounded), the engine runs normally.
So to wire a basic kill switch (lanyard style):
- Find the black/yellow kill wire coming from the ignition/engine harness.
- Run that wire to one terminal of your kill switch.
- The other terminal of the switch goes to ground (engine block or ground bus).
- When the lanyard is pulled, the switch closes and grounds that black/yellow wire — engine dies.
That’s it. It’s a “normally open” setup that closes to ground when activated.
Just make sure that you're grounding to a clean engine ground, you don’t accidentally tie it into a power wire, and connections are solid and corrosion-protected (marine environment is brutal).
If you want the exact wiring diagram with connector pinouts and harness colors for your specific horsepower model, the OEM service manual has the full ignition system wiring laid out clearly to help you do it properly 👍🏻
