Alright, depends a little on the model, but most Isuzu 4x4 systems (D-Max, older Rodeo, Trooper, etc.) work pretty similar. Most of them are part-time 4WD, not full-time AWD. That means:
- Normally you’re driving in 2H (2-wheel drive) — rear wheels only.
- When you switch to 4H, the transfer case locks the front and rear driveshafts together. That sends power to the front diff and now all four wheels are pulling.
- Then there’s 4L (low range) — same thing as 4H, but with lower gearing inside the transfer case. That gives you more torque and slower speed for off-road, mud, climbing, etc.
Now, when it’s in 4H or 4L, the front and rear axles are mechanically locked together. There’s no center differential like AWD cars have. That’s why you shouldn’t use it on dry pavement — it’ll bind up the drivetrain.
Depending on the year, engagement can be:
- Manual lever — straight mechanical transfer case
- Electronic shift-on-the-fly — dash switch controls a motor on the transfer case
- Some have automatic locking hubs or vacuum-operated front axle engagement
So basic flow looks like this:
Engine → Transmission → Transfer Case → Rear driveshaft (always connected) Front driveshaft (engages in 4WD) → Front diff → Front wheels
