On the Massey-Harris Pony, the PTO lever just engages and disengages the PTO shaft — that’s it.
When you move the lever to ON, it connects engine power to the rear PTO, so whatever’s hooked up back there (mower, tiller, pump, etc.) will start turning. Move it to OFF, and the PTO is disconnected and stops spinning.
Couple things to keep in mind on these old Ponys:
- It’s a transmission-driven PTO, not live PTO
- That means the PTO only turns when the clutch is engaged
- Push the clutch in → PTO stops
- Let the clutch out → PTO turns
So basically, that lever just decides whether the PTO is hooked to the drivetrain or not.
