Yeah on the 2001 Dakota 5.9L Magnum, the wiring can look a little “criss-crossy” from the factory — that’s normal. Chrysler runs the injector and coil wires in a bank-to-bank harness, so they cross over the intake to keep all the lengths the same and cut down on signal noise.
A couple basics so you know what’s what:
Coils
- You’ve got one main coil, not coil-on-plug
- The PCM fires it through the ignition coil driver
- The distributor then sends spark to each plug
So the coil wiring is actually pretty simple — most of the “extra” wires you see go to the distributor pickup and sensors, not individual coils.
Injectors
- Bank 1 injectors are on cylinders 1-3-5-7
- Bank 2 injectors are on 2-4-6-8
- They share common power and the PCM fires them in pairs, not individual fire like newer engines
So yeah… it looks messy, but it’s how they designed it.
If you’re trying to trace a specific wire or figure out the colors/pinouts, this 👉🏻 2001 Dodge Dakota Service & Repair Manual has the exact injector/coil wiring diagrams:
- Connector pinouts
- Wire colors
- Harness routing
- PCM firing control
Way easier than squinting at the harness and guessing.
