Yeah, there is a difference between ABS and non-ABS front hubs on a Hilux. The ABS version has that tone ring (looks like a toothed or slotted ring) so the wheel-speed sensor can read it. The non-ABS hub won’t have that — it’s just a plain spacer/end cap.
So what you saw makes sense:
- Original hub: plain spacer → non-ABS style
- Replacement hub: spacer with ABS tone ring built in → ABS style
Now, if your Hilux doesn’t have ABS, running an ABS-type hub normally won’t hurt anything. The tone ring just sits there doing nothing — no sensor, no problem. But if your Hilux does have ABS, then you must use the ABS hub, otherwise your ABS light will come on and the system won’t work.
The only thing that matters is:
- The hub fits properly
- Bearing preload/torque is correct
- No rubbing or contact between the tone ring and anything else
If everything spins freely and the ABS light isn’t on, you’re fine.
If you want, you could also tell us the year/model of your Hilux and whether yours actually has front ABS. We can tell you exactly which hub style it should have.
