On a Hiace, “no power under load” usually comes down to a handful of common things, depending on whether it’s diesel or petrol — but the diesels are the usual suspects here. Most of the time it’s one of these:
- Fuel supply issue (clogged filter, weak lift pump, dirty injectors)
- Turbo / boost leak
- EGR stuck open
- MAF sensor dirty
- Or a blocked catalytic / DPF if it’s a newer one
Here’s how I’d check it:
-
Fuel filter first — If it’s old or you don’t know when it was last changed, just change it. A partially blocked filter will let it idle fine but fall flat the moment you try to accelerate.
-
Listen for turbo spool / watch for boost — If it’s a diesel Hiace with a turbo, look at the intercooler hoses. Any cracks or loose clamps → boost is leaking → zero power.
-
Clean the MAF sensor — It’s on the intake tube. If it’s covered in dust or oil film, it’ll tell the ECU the wrong airflow → weak fueling → no power. Just use MAF cleaner, don’t touch it with your fingers.
-
EGR valve — If it’s stuck open, it dumps exhaust back in when it shouldn’t → engine can’t breathe → feels like dragging an anchor. A Hiace with a sticky EGR usually idles rough and smokes a bit too.
-
If it’s newer and has a DPF — A clogged DPF feels exactly like the turbo disappeared. If the exhaust smells hot and the van feels like it can’t rev under load, that’s a hint.
Of course, there are a lot of possible causes here, and it's very hard to narrow down the troubleshooting advice given the limited information. But this issue is often well-covered in the repair manual, from diagnosis to the repair procedure.
Perhaps if you could tell us more details about your Hiace (e.g. year, engine, generation, etc.), we'll be able to assist you further.
