If all your dash lights went out at once and the fuses check good, next spot to look is the dimmer switch (part of the headlight switch on most Dakotas). When that rheostat goes bad, the dash illumination just dies completely. Try rolling it back and forth a few times — if they flicker, that’s your culprit.
If the dimmer’s fine, then check for power at the illumination circuit. Sometimes the ground behind the dash cluster works loose or corrodes, which will kill all the backlighting. Less common, but the cluster itself can fail — cold solder joints on the board will cause weird electrical gremlins.
The service manual has the wiring diagram and connector pinouts so you can test for power/ground at the cluster before tearing into things. That way you’ll know if it’s the switch, a wiring issue, or the cluster itself. So perhaps you could contact us again with more details on your Dakota (e.g. model year, generation, etc.), and we'll be happy to assist you further.
