Here’s how you can change the timing belt on your first-gen RAV4 (1996–2000, XA10) — applies to the 2.0L 3S-FE engine, which is the one most of them comes with:
- Disconnect the battery — Safety first.
- Remove the accessory belts and upper engine mount — Gotta clear the way, including the alternator and power steering belts, and that upper torque mount near the timing cover.
- Take off the timing cover — It's in sections, so be ready with some patience and a few 10mm bolts.
- Align the timing marks — Rotate the crankshaft to TDC (top dead center) on cylinder 1. Cam and crank sprockets should line up with their marks — double check this.
- Remove crank pulley & old belt — Crank pulley bolt can be a pain — an impact gun or a crank-holding tool helps a lot. Once that’s off, you can slide the old belt out.
- Inspect & replace tensioner and idlers if needed — Don’t cheap out. If they’re noisy or sloppy, replace 'em now — saves a headache later.
- Install the new belt — Start at the crank, route it around cam, tensioner, and water pump in the right direction — keep it tight between the pulleys.
- Set tension, rotate, and re-check — Spin the crank by hand (2 turns clockwise), realign marks, and make sure there's no slack or odd tension.
- Button everything back up — Reverse of removal. New water pump or seals? Do ’em now if you’ve got ‘em handy.
This job's a bit tight but very doable in a garage. If you want all the torque specs, diagrams, and step-by-step pictures, I’d suggest grabbing the manual — it covers everything down to the bolt sizes and tightening sequences. Way easier to follow than winging it ✌🏻
