For your Volvo XC70, here’s how you go about removing the driver’s seat belt and the B-pillar trim — since they’re kinda tied together:
- Remove the B-pillar trim first
- Slide the front seat all the way forward and drop the backrest if you need more room.
- Pop off the weather stripping around the B-pillar — just enough to free the edge of the trim.
- The trim is usually a two-piece setup — an upper and lower section.
- Start with the lower half: it’s usually held in by a clip or two. Gently pull it outwards from the middle and work your way down.
- Then move to the upper half — it clips in too, just be careful around the seat belt slot. Sometimes there’s a little push tab or plastic cover you gotta remove to access a hidden clip.
- Remove the seat belt
- Once the trim’s out of the way, you’ll see the seat belt retractor bolted to the B-pillar.
- Unbolt the anchor point down by the floor (Torx bolt usually).
- Then unbolt the retractor unit — again, typically Torx.
- Disconnect the seat belt electrical connector if yours has a pretensioner system wired in (depends on the year/model).
- Pull the belt and retractor out in one piece.
To reinstall, it’s just the reverse. Make sure the retractor is upright when you bolt it back in (they don’t work right if they’re tilted), reconnect any wiring, torque everything down snug, then reclip the B-pillar trim and press the weather stripping back into place.
I recommend grabbing this 2003-2016 Volvo XC70 Service & Repair Manual Software for a more detailed procedure. It includes the manufacturer's step-by-step instructions, clear images, and exploded-view illustrations so you can do the job properly.
Good luck!
