On most Ford 4000 tractors, the hydraulic system and transmission often share the same fluid reservoir, especially in models with a combined sump. You won’t always find a traditional "dipstick" or “check plug” like on a car.
Instead, look behind your left foot area when seated — there should be a large plug (usually around the shifter area or on top of the transmission casing). That’s where you fill and also check the level. Fluid should be just up to the bottom of that hole when the tractor is on level ground. Some models have a small level plug near the side of the transmission casing instead.
Also worth noting: if the hydraulics are acting up or seem weak, low fluid is usually the first thing to check — just make sure you’re using the right spec oil too (usually something like UTF or 134D type).
If you’re still not sure where to look, I’d recommend grabbing this 👉🏻 1965-1975 Ford 4000 Series Tractors OEM Service & Repair Manual — it’ll show the exact plug location and procedure based on your transmission type (4-speed, 8-speed, etc.).
Good luck!
