If you’ve got a new car battery and the key fob battery’s fresh, but it still won’t turn over, there’s a few things to check. And yeah, if it’s an MG, it might be picky about certain stuff, especially if it's a newer one with push-button start.
Things to check:
- Brake pedal switch – Try pressing the brake pedal firmly while starting. If the switch isn't registering, the car won’t crank even though everything lights up.
- Starter motor or starter relay – Could be the starter’s not getting the signal, or the relay’s shot. You won’t hear that “click” or turnover if that’s the case.
- Immobilizer issue – Some MGs (and other newer cars) won’t start if they don’t recognize the key fob properly, even with a new battery. Try holding the fob right next to the start button and see if it changes anything.
- Battery terminals – Even if the battery’s new, double-check the terminals. If they’re loose or corroded, the starter might not be getting enough juice.
- Neutral safety switch – If it’s an automatic, try shifting to neutral and then starting. Sometimes the gear position sensor goes out and the car thinks it’s not in Park.
If it lights up but doesn't even try to crank, one of those five is usually the issue. Of course, there's not much we can advise you given the limited amount of information. But the service manual of your car will contain the troubleshooting charts and step-by-step instructions on how to fix such an issue.
So feel free to reach out to us with more details on your MG, and we'll be happy to help you further.
