Yeah, sounds like your VX is stuck in limp mode. Pretty common when something's not sitting right with the system.
First thing I’d check is the oil level. These Yamahas are kinda picky — too much or too little oil and it throws a fit. Make sure you're checking it the right way too: engine warm, ski level, dipstick wiped and rechecked. Seen a bunch of guys overfill and they're stuck in limp mode too.
Could also be something like a bad sensor — temp sensor, throttle position, clogged cooling line making it think it’s overheating… any of that can trip it. Sometimes even a weak battery can mess with it.
As for getting it out of limp mode, usually, once you fix whatever’s causing it, the system resets itself. You can try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, but if the issue’s still there, it’ll just go right back into limp when you start it up again.
If it’s new to you, I’d start with the oil and check for any codes if you’ve got a scan tool. Also, this issue is something the service manual can always help you with, as it has troubleshooting charts, step-by-step procedures, and exploded-view illustrations.
