Yeah, that happens a lot with those 150 Mercs. If you’re seeing some oil coming out the exhaust and slicking up the water, don’t panic right away. Couple things could be going on:
- A little bit is actually normal on two-strokes — they just don’t burn all the oil, especially if you’ve been idling around a bunch.
- Could be running a little rich, so it’s dumping more fuel/oil mix than it should.
- If you’re premixing, double-check you’re not being heavy-handed with the oil.
- Worst case, sometimes a seal inside lets oil sneak where it shouldn’t, but that’s not the first thing I’d jump to.
If it’s just a light sheen, that’s usually fine. If it’s pouring out and leaving puddles, then you’ll want to look closer. Easiest thing to check first is your plugs — if they’re oily and fouled up, you know the motor’s running rich or burning sloppy.
Run it a bit harder too. These motors clean up better once you get them off idle. If the problem keeps up, that’s when the service manual’s handy because it’ll walk you through checking the oil injection setup and seals.
Of course, given the limited information, not much troubleshooting can be done from here. But the service manual can provide detailed instructions on how to diagnose and fix this problem.
Perhaps if you could let us know more details about your model, we'll do our best to help point you in the right direction.
