In the 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLK350, the “machine” in the glove box is most likely the CD changer unit (often a 6-disc changer) or, in some cars equipped with the COMAND system, a CD/DVD-based navigation drive.
It’s mounted there to keep it protected and out of the way, and you load discs into it just like a regular player. If your car has navigation, that same unit might also read the map DVD. In some trims, the glove box might also house the media interface or iPod integration module, but for most 2007 SLK350s, it’s the CD changer.
If you need more detail, the owner’s manual will have a section showing exactly what it is and how to operate it based on your car’s options.
