On a 2004 Mercedes C240, the transmission range sensor (called neutral safety switch in Mercedes speak) is mounted inside the transmission on top of the valve body — it’s not an external bolt-on part like on some other cars.
To get to it:
- Safely lift the car and drain the transmission fluid.
- Remove the transmission pan.
- You’ll see the valve body — the range sensor is integrated into the black plastic conductor plate assembly on top of it.
- It connects to the transmission’s electrical plug via the round 13-pin connector on the side of the transmission case.
If you'd like to see where it's located visually, or rely on the OEM removal and replacement procedures, I'd suggest you go with this one here 👉 2004 Mercedes-Benz C240 (W203) Service & Repair Manual
It should cover anything and everything you might need to find and fix the problem with your neutral safety switch.
