To determine the year of your Mercury 15HP outboard, look for the serial number plate — typically located on the transom bracket or the engine block. Once you find the serial number, you can match it to Mercury’s model year charts, which are available online or through a Mercury dealer.
If the sticker is missing or unreadable, you might find the serial stamped somewhere on the welch plug (a small metal disc) on the engine block. From there, cross-reference that number to identify the production year.
