For your 1988 Harley-Davidson FLHS, here’s the primary chaincase cover torque sequence and specs to help you button it up properly and avoid oil leaks:
Torque Specs:
-
Primary cover bolts:
Torque to 108–120 in-lbs (that’s about 9–10 ft-lbs).
Torque Sequence (typical clockwise star pattern):
Start from the center bolt area and work your way outward in a crisscross/star pattern. Harley doesn’t always number them in manuals, but follow this general method:
-
Top-center bolt
-
Opposite lower side
-
Top-left
-
Bottom-right
-
Top-right
-
Bottom-left
-
Work your way around remaining bolts diagonally
This pattern ensures even pressure on the gasket and helps prevent leaks. Hand-tighten all bolts first, then torque to spec in sequence.
If your cover uses a new gasket, don’t overtighten, and give it time to seat properly. You’re good to go.
In case you want to go deeper into this, this manual is compatible with your 1988 FLHS Electra Glide-Sport and does contain procedures on the primary chain case, including step-by-step instructions, clear images, and exploded-view illustrations.
