If you’ve got a 2002 VW Jetta and you lost the original key fob but got a new one, programming it depends on whether you’re trying to start the car (immobilizer chip), or lock/unlock the doors remotely (keyless entry).
For the immobilizer, you’ll need the chip inside the key to be matched to the car — and unfortunately, that part usually requires a dealer or someone with VCDS (VAG-COM) and the PIN code for your car’s ECU. It’s not something you can DIY without special tools.
But for remote locking/unlocking, here’s the DIY method that usually works on many MK4 Jettas:
-
Put your new remote key in the ignition, turn it to the “ON” position (but don’t start the car).
-
Close the driver door and lock it manually with a second key (in the door cylinder).
-
Press the “Unlock” button on the new remote once. Wait 6–10 seconds, then press it again.
-
If successful, the car may blink the hazards or unlock — that confirms it’s programmed.
-
Turn the ignition off and test the remote.
If you don’t have a second key to do this, or that method doesn’t work, you’ll likely need VCDS software and a compatible cable to program it via the OBD2 port.
