To find the model year on a Mercury 9.8, what you’ll need is the serial number.
Here’s how you do it:
-
Look for the serial number plate – it's usually on the transom bracket (the clamp mount area), either on the side or the back.
-
The plate will say something like:
MERCURY MARINE
SERIAL NO: 0T123456
HP: 9.8
-
Once you have the serial number, match it to a Mercury serial number year chart — they’re easy to find online with a quick search for “Mercury outboard serial number year chart.”
Here’s a quick example:
-
Serial numbers starting with 0T** = early 2000s
-
0G** = mid-to-late 90s
-
6E9** or 7R3**** = typically older models from the 70s/80s
You can also reach out to us with your serial number and we'll help to look it up for you. And if you need to do some services/repairs on it, we can also advise you to the right manual too ✌🏻
