Sounds like your Yamaha 150HP’s reverse gear cable might be out of adjustment. It's a pretty common issue, especially after cable stretch or wear over time.
Here’s a basic walkthrough to get you sorted:
-
Start at the control box. Put the shifter in neutral. Then pop the cover on the control box so you can see the cable connection inside. Make sure the detent (that “click” when you shift) lines up with the neutral position.
-
Move to the engine side, take off the cowling and find where the shift cable connects to the shift linkage on the motor. It’s usually a small threaded rod with a barrel nut.
-
Inspect the cable travel. Shift into reverse from the control box and watch the cable. If it’s not fully engaging the reverse gear (you might hear it grind or feel resistance without locking in), you’ll need to adjust the barrel nut.
-
Make the adjustment — with the engine in neutral, loosen the lock nut and turn the barrel nut slightly in or out to add or reduce cable throw toward reverse. Just a few turns can make a difference. Re-tighten the lock nut when done.
-
To test if it worked, shift into reverse and back to neutral a few times with the motor off. Then try it out running in a barrel or on muffs. Make sure it actually goes into reverse cleanly.
If it still won’t engage, there could be internal linkage issues or the gear itself might be worn (but I recommend trying the cable adjustment first, that’s the easy fix).
In any case, feel free to reach out to us with more details of your motor (e.g. model, model year, serial number, etc.) and we will assist you further ✌🏻
