That really depends on the exact model year and engine variant. Across the years, Mercury produced several 5.0L MerCruiser engines (based on the 305 CID GM V8), with different power outputs depending on whether the engine was carbureted or equipped with MPI (Multi-Port Injection), and whether it was used in a sterndrive or inboard configuration.
In the models specifically covered by this manual, the following horsepower ratings apply:
- 5.0L Carbureted Sterndrive (MCM): 220 HP
- 5.0L MPI Sterndrive (MCM): 260 HP
These ratings are measured at the crankshaft according to SAE J1228 standards, under normal operating conditions.
Important: Other 5.0L MerCruiser engines made before 2001, or for different configurations, may have different horsepower values. This manual only applies to the engines and serial ranges listed. If you’re unsure, feel free to provide your engine’s serial number and we can help confirm the correct specification.
