Troubleshooting this kind of issue remotely is always a bit tricky — especially without knowing exactly how the old parts came off, how the new cable was adjusted, or what else might’ve been touched in the process. But I can definitely try point you in the right direction.
First off: the tie rods aren’t likely to have anything to do with this. They’re part of your steering and won’t affect gear selection, so you can probably rule those out as a factor.
Since you just replaced the shifter cable, that’s the most obvious place to start looking. If it’s not properly adjusted — or if it’s installed just a bit off — the transmission range selector (on the trans side) might not be matching what the gear shifter thinks it’s doing. That could absolutely explain why you're stuck in park or seeing the wrong gear when shifting.
Here’s what to check:
- Cable alignment and adjustment: Make sure the shift cable is properly adjusted to the park position. On most setups, the cable needs to be installed with both the shifter and the transmission in "Park" at the same time before securing the linkage.
- Cable bracket mounting: Double-check that the cable bracket is firmly mounted and not flexing or out of place. If it's loose, the inner cable won’t move correctly, throwing everything off.
- Shift interlock system: If your brake pedal switch or shift interlock solenoid isn't functioning right, the shifter might physically be stuck in park. Try pressing the brake firmly or listening for a "click" under the console when you do.
- Check for binding or resistance: If the cable is binding, bent, or routed incorrectly, it might not be getting full travel — even if everything looks okay at first glance.
- Transmission side: Make sure the lever on the transmission is moving through all gear positions manually. If it’s stiff, disconnected, or misaligned, that’s a problem.
If you’re still stuck after looking at all that, the best bet is to follow the cable adjustment procedure in the repair manual. It’ll give you the proper steps and specs so you know everything’s lined up just the way GM intended.
I hope that helps!
