It's frustrating when the simple fixes don't work, but you've done the right thing by checking the fuses and bulbs first. That's always step one.
When the lights are still out after that, you're almost always looking at a circuit problem—either the power isn't getting to the lights, or the circuit isn't being told to turn on. Based on my experience, here are the next most common culprits to check:
- The Door Ajar Switch: This is a very common failure point. The car's computer gets a signal from a switch in the door jamb to tell it when a door is open. If that switch fails, the car never knows a door is open, and the dome light won't come on automatically.
- A Bad Ground Wire: Electrical gremlins often come down to a bad ground. The interior lighting circuit needs a solid connection to the vehicle's chassis to work. If that ground wire is corroded, loose, or broken, the lights won't work even if the bulbs and fuses are fine.
- The Light Switch Assembly: The physical switch you use to turn the lights on manually can simply wear out and fail internally.
Now, this is where you have to stop guessing and start testing, otherwise you'll just be throwing parts at it. To figure out which of these is the problem, you need to be able to trace the circuit, test the switches for continuity, and find the location of the ground points. That's where the manual comes in.
The repair manual for your C-Max has the complete, factory wiring diagrams. It will show you the exact wire colors, the connector pinouts, and the switch locations you need to properly diagnose the fault with a simple multimeter. It's the only way to accurately find the problem and fix it right the first time.
