Ah yeah, that happens more than BMW would like to admit, especially on the G01 models. If your boot lock isn’t releasing, a few things could be going on.
First thing to check is if you can hear the actuator clicking when you hit the fob or the dash switch. If you hear nothing at all, chances are it’s either a blown fuse, dead actuator, or a wiring issue in the harness that runs along the hinge. Those wires love to break from all the opening and closing.
If it’s trying to open but feels stuck, the latch might just be mechanically jammed (dirt, gunk, or a misaligned striker can do that). Sometimes giving it a gentle push-down while pressing the button helps it release. If it’s a power tailgate, try the emergency release from inside the trunk. You might need to fold down the rear seats and crawl in. Look for a plastic cover or manual release tab near the latch.
If that won't do, this OEM repair manual does walk you through tailgate latch removal, wiring checks, and how to test the actuator if you need to get hands-on with it.
Wish you the best of luck!
