Replacing the A/C compressor on a T6 Ranger isn’t the worst job in the world, but it does take some patience and a bit of prep. Luckily, this OEM service manual does cover the full procedure.
Here’s how you’d tackle it:
First thing, you’ve gotta safely discharge the A/C system. Don’t just crack open a line; the refrigerant’s under high pressure and needs to be recovered with proper equipment. Once that’s done, disconnect the battery so you’re not working around live wiring.
The compressor sits low on the engine, usually bolted to the block near the serpentine belt area. You’ll need to remove the drive belt, then disconnect the electrical connector and the high and low-pressure refrigerant lines going into the back of the compressor. Watch out for residual oil or pressure.
From there, just unbolt the compressor and work it out. Clearance can be a little tight depending on the model, so sometimes you’ll need to remove a splash shield or move the radiator fan for a bit more room.
Before you install the new compressor, make sure to check the oil level in the new unit (some come pre-filled, some don’t). Then bolt it in, reconnect everything, evacuate and recharge the system with the correct refrigerant (usually R-1234yf on the newer Rangers), and double-check for leaks.
Once you fire it up, watch for weird noises or pressure spikes. If you’ve got a scan tool, you can also check for proper clutch engagement and pressure readings from the sensors.
If you need more information on this job, I recommend grabbing the manual, since it covers the manufacturer's A/C compressor replacement procedure, including step-by-step instructions, clear images, and exploded-view illustrations.
Good luck!
