Replacing the starter on a Polaris Magnum or Sportsman 500 isn’t too bad. Just a little cramped depending on what model you’ve got. The starter’s mounted low on the side of the engine, usually on the pull cord side, tucked near the bottom of the crankcase.
First thing you want to do is disconnect the battery so you don’t accidentally arc anything while you’re down there. Then unplug the starter cable; there’s usually one main wire bolted to the back of the starter.
The starter itself is held in with two bolts. They're usually 8mm or 10mm heads. Once those are out, you might need to give the starter a little wiggle (it’s sealed with an O-ring and can be stuck in place from years of grime or heat).
Slide the old one out, clean the mounting surface, and pop the new one in with a bit of fresh oil on the O-ring. Reinstall the bolts, reconnect the wire, hook the battery back up, and you’re good to go.
It’s a pretty straightforward swap, but if you want to double-check everything and make sure you're doing everything right, you can't go wrong with grabbing the manual. It has all the torque specs you need for the job, as well as step-by-step instructions, clear images, and exploded-view illustrations.
Good luck!
