Ah, the good ol' transmission fluid change — but it's worth noting that with these 2019 Countrymans will be a bit different. MINI uses a sealed-style transmission, so there’s no dipstick, but you can still get it done with the right steps.
First, make sure you’ve got the correct OEM-spec fluid. It's usually Shell M-1375.4 or equivalent for the Aisin 8-speed auto (depending on your exact model).
Start by getting the car up on a lift or jack stands, making sure it's level. Then, remove the transmission drain plug and let the old fluid drain out completely. Some models have a filter integrated into the pan, so if you're doing a full service, you’ll want to remove the pan, clean the magnet, and replace the filter or pan if needed.
Once that’s done, reinstall the pan (if removed) and replace the drain plug. Then, fill the transmission through the fill plug, usually located on the side of the transmission. Add fluid until it starts to trickle out.
Here’s the tricky part: start the engine, cycle through all the gears slowly with your foot on the brake, then let it idle in Park. While the engine’s still running and the trans is warm (around 30-50°C / 86-122°F), top off the fluid until it just dribbles out again. Then plug it back up and you're good to go.
In any case, the OEM service manual should outline the step-by-step procedure for a transmission fluid change for your exact model, complete with torque specs, clear images, and exploded-view illustrations. If you're planning to do this job on your own, it's a no brainer really 😉
Good luck!
