If you're doing the water pump on a B5 A4 (’94–’01), yeah, there are a couple of tools that’ll make your life way easier—especially if you’ve got the 1.8T or 2.8 V6.
For the 1.8T, it’s part of the timing belt job since the pump’s driven off the timing belt, so you’ll need a crankshaft locking pin or counter-hold tool to keep things in place when you pull the belt. A camshaft locking bar isn’t absolutely required, but it helps keep the timing dead on when reinstalling everything. You’ll also want a torque wrench for reassembly, and honestly, a good set of long-reach sockets and extensions helps a ton in those tight spots.
If you’re working on the 2.8 V6, that job's even more involved because of the front-end service position—basically loosening the radiator support and sliding the whole front clip forward to make space. It sounds worse than it is, but it takes time. Again, no crazy special tools, but patience, good lighting, and some room to work are key.
Luckily, the manual software should walk you through all the steps, including diagrams and torque specs. If you wish you replace your own water pump, and you seek the manufacturer's recommended procedure, this manual is perfect for you!
