Yeah, I’ve done this before — it’s a pretty simple mod if you want a bit more turbo whistle without messing with performance. The silencer ring is just a press-fit insert inside the compressor housing of the turbo, and removing it doesn’t really affect boost, just lets more of that turbo spool sound through.
To get it out, first, remove the intake pipe going to the turbo so you can see inside the compressor inlet. The silencer ring is usually a smooth metal or plastic ring sitting right at the opening. Some are held in with a snap ring, others are just pressed in. If it has a snap ring, you’ll need a pair of snap ring pliers to pull it out. If it’s a press-fit, you might need to gently pry it out with a pick or screwdriver — just be careful not to scratch the housing.
Once it’s out, just reinstall the intake pipe, and that’s it! You’ll get a bit more whoosh and whistle from the turbo, but nothing crazy. If you ever want to put it back, it just presses right back in. Quick and easy job, maybe 10-15 minutes tops.
Good luck!
