Yeah, I’ve dealt with this before — it’s usually the trunk latch sensor acting up, but there are a couple of things that could be causing it. The hardtop won’t even try to open if the system thinks the trunk isn’t fully closed, so here’s what I’d check:
- Trunk latch switch: The sensor inside the latch can get dirty or go bad, making the car think the trunk isn’t shut even when it is. Try manually pressing the latch with a screwdriver while the trunk is open and see if the message clears. If it does, you might just need to clean or replace the sensor.
- Soft-close motor (if equipped): If your SL550 has the soft-close feature and it’s not pulling the trunk shut all the way, the system won’t recognize it as closed. Try pushing down firmly on the trunk lid and see if that makes a difference.
- Hydraulic pressure: The top and trunk operation are tied into the hydraulic system, and if the pressure is low or the pump is weak, it might not be pulling the trunk into position properly.
- Alignment issue: If the trunk lid isn’t sitting flush or the struts are weak, it might not be engaging the latch properly. Sometimes just adjusting the latch alignment a little can fix it.
I’d start with the trunk latch sensor. It’s the most common issue, and it’s an easy fix. If that’s not it, then check the soft-close function and hydraulics. Luckily, the manual does have troubleshooting charts for issues like these, so you may want to check it out — will save you tons of time and will reduce the risk of replacing parts for no reason.
Good luck!
