Yeah, I’ve been there. It can be frustrating when there’s no fault code, but that ABS light won’t go away. Here’s what I’d check first:
- Battery voltage – BMWs are picky about voltage, and a weak battery can throw random warning lights. If your battery’s old or the alternator isn’t charging right, the ABS system might just be freaking out.
- Wheel speed sensors – Even if there’s no code, one of the sensors could be giving sketchy readings. If you’ve got a scan tool that can show live data, check to see if one is acting up.
- Dirty connectors – The wheel speed sensor plugs can get corroded or gunked up, especially if you drive in bad weather. Unplug them, clean them up, and see if that helps.
- Steering angle sensor – If you recently had an alignment, disconnected the battery, or did any suspension work, the steering angle sensor might need a reset. A good scan tool can usually do it.
- ABS module or wiring issue – If all else checks out, the ABS module could be acting up, or there’s a bad wire somewhere. But I’d rule out the easy stuff first.
If you’ve got a BMW-specific scan tool (INPA, ISTA, or a good OBD reader), check for hidden faults — sometimes basic scanners won’t pick them up. I’d start with the battery and wheel speed sensors since those cause most of the headaches.
