Personally, I would start by checking the starter relay. In most W203 models, the starter relay is located in the front SAM (Signal Acquisition Module) fuse box, under the hood on the passenger side. Look for relay K40/7, which controls power to the starter. If this relay is faulty, the starter won’t engage even if everything else is fine. You can try swapping it with a similar relay from another circuit to see if that solves the issue.
If the relay is good, the problem could also be:
- Neutral Safety Switch (Gear Selector Switch): If the car doesn’t recognize it’s in Park or Neutral, it won’t crank. Try shifting to Neutral and starting it.
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS): If this sensor fails, the car may not crank or may crank but not start.
- Key/Immobilizer Issue: If the key isn’t being recognized properly, the car won’t allow the starter to engage. Try using a spare key.
- Wiring or Ground Issues: A bad ground connection to the starter or corroded wiring can prevent power from reaching the starter.
In any case, this manual has the troubleshooting guide you need to help you recognize the issue.
