Replacing the lever cowl latch on a Mercury outboard is actually pretty simple. Here's how I usually do it:
First, remove the engine cowl and take a look at the latch mechanism. It’s usually held in place by a couple of small screws or rivets, depending on the model. If yours has screws, just back them out, and the old latch should slide right out. If it’s riveted, you’ll need to drill out the rivets — nothing crazy, just use a small drill bit slightly larger than the rivet head.
Once the old latch is out, line up the new one in the same spot. If it uses screws, bolt it back in. If it was riveted, you’ll need to use a rivet gun to secure the new one. Before tightening everything down, make sure the latch moves freely and engages properly with the cowl when you close it.
If the latch was sticking before, now’s a good time to lubricate the mechanism so it works smoothly. Close the cowl, test the latch a few times, and you’re good to go.

Super easy job — maybe 10-15 minutes tops if you have the right tools. Good luck ✌🏻
